Our speaker at the February SNUG meeting was Dave Lockwood, whose topic was “Photography: Technology and Art”

He began with a historical survey of various attempts to produce images, leading up to the widespread use of the Kodak Box Brownie camera in the 20th century. The use of roll film meant after you had made 8 exposures, the film had to be developed to produce negative and then positive images. You might not see the results until some time later, maybe several days.

A big step forward came when camera film was replaced by a sensor that could distinguish colors. It captured an image and stored it in a file that could then be processed and modified in the camera to allow automatic focusing, facial recognition, rapid photo sequences etc. You could also have subsequent processing in a computer, and Dave described many possible adjustments such as cropping, red eye reduction, light brightening, and background changing. Many powerful cameras are produced by various companies including Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji that are affordable by the amateur photographer.

Dave then continued his presentation by discussing certain artistic considerations prior to taking a photo, and included several tips that can lead to artistically satisfying results. Many of these suggestions apply equally well to taking videos.

The audience appreciated very much the insights they learned from Dave’s illustrated talk.
